I live in Portland now, and I got the Clearwire WiMAX deal. Works great on
my work Windows laptop and is extremely fast but am trying to set it up on
on an ubuntu laptop. But the USB Wimax modem doesn't have drivers for Linux.
So I have two choices in front of me -> Install QEmu and I hear that it has
good USB support, so I can basically have WinXP running inside the Linux
install and the WIMAX modem should work.

I spoke with the tech support guy in Clearwire and he actually seemed to
know a thing or two about Linux. He said that it should also be do-able
under WINE, but the rest of his inputs didn't make much sense. Can you guys
take a look and offer me a suggestion or two? I installed Wine, made sure I
had libusb, libusb-dev installed. I was able to install the Clearwire
software without issues from within Wine. I can see the software but when I
try to run it with wine, it basically leads to a giant error message
scroll-fest.

Micah_W [7:52:33 PM]: Welcome to our real-time support chat. How can I help
you today?
*Ranjan Grover [7:52:33 PM]: Expanding coverage in Portland?

*Micah_W [7:52:47 PM]: Correct, currently our setup is about 1/3 of what it
will be in the future.
*Ranjan Grover [7:53:07 PM]: I have a clearwire account and I was hoping to
see what the future is gonna be and what timelines

*Micah_W [7:53:10 PM]: Since we just started about a month ago, we've only
put up about 1/3 of the towers.
[7:53:26 PM]: Current roadmap states by end of this year hopefully all of
Portland will be in coverage.
*Ranjan Grover [7:53:32 PM]: i'm gonna be moving to a different location
soon and i wanna make sure it'll work there.. is that possible?
[7:53:48 PM]: no map that i can look at?

*Micah_W [7:53:56 PM]: Don't have one.
*Ranjan Grover [7:54:05 PM]: what about linux / os x support?

*Micah_W [7:54:22 PM]: Well, there probably won't ever be Linux USB drivers.
[7:54:35 PM]: And the Home Modem doesn't require any for linux or MacOS.
[7:54:48 PM]: But, there is OSX drivers in the loop for the USB modem.
[7:54:57 PM]: I believe they're currently in a late Alpha stage.
[7:55:02 PM]: Possible release by summer.
*Ranjan Grover [7:55:18 PM]: ok, sounds good enough... i have a laptop which
has linux on it.. so that can't be used on the mobile network.. which sux..
but whatever

*Micah_W [7:55:22 PM]: I've been told the USB modem works fine in Bootcamp
or in a virtual machine though.
[7:55:38 PM]: If you want to run in that way on OSX/linux.
*Ranjan Grover [7:55:53 PM]: no.. i want to run it natively in linux

*Micah_W [7:55:58 PM]: Just setup WINE and bridge the network interfaces.
[7:56:10 PM]: Well, that probably won't happen.
*Ranjan Grover [7:56:16 PM]: it works with wine?

*Micah_W [7:56:27 PM]: Its just a virtual environment.
[7:56:39 PM]: As long as you have proper libusb support.
*Ranjan Grover [7:56:53 PM]: oooh... i'll have to try this.. i have never
tried wine with usb devices
[7:57:09 PM]: btw, you're the most awesome tech support guy i've ever had
the pleasure of speak with
[7:57:10 PM]: thanks...

*Micah_W [7:57:11 PM]: Its not supported of course, but there shouldn't be
any reason why it won't work.
[7:57:29 PM]: You're welcome, did you have any other questions?
*Ranjan Grover [7:57:29 PM]: i'll try it right now... wine is jsut an
apt-get away
[7:57:40 PM]: nope.. that's it

*Micah_W [7:57:44 PM]: Debian, smart choice.
[7:57:54 PM]: Alright, you have a wonderful day.
*Ranjan Grover [7:57:55 PM]: heh... i take it you're a linux user too

*Micah_W [7:58:03 PM]: I used bsd currently.
[7:58:13 PM]: openbsd > *
*Ranjan Grover [7:58:25 PM]: ok.. i'll try it and see if it works

*Micah_W [7:58:47 PM]: Thanks, let us know if you get a working solution.
*Ranjan Grover [7:58:52 PM]: will do

*Micah_W [7:58:54 PM]: Take care.
*Ranjan Grover [7:58:57 PM]: later

*Micah_W [7:59:00 PM]: Thank you for chatting with Clear today, have a great
