I read somewhere that the newer ones without the 'L' suffix don't have
enough memory to hold the linux firmware.

The Linksys WRT54GL router is advertised as linux compatible.

Can someone tell me if it is also suitable for a windows network?

Absolutely!

The 'L' designation means that the firmware is Linux-powered.

Actually, I believe *all* of the WRT54G's are "Linux-powered"

(or, at the very least, easily reflashed with a Linux kernel

I have flashed my WRT54GS with DD-WRT and it works really nicely. The nice
thing is the WRT54GS is a bit cheaper than the WRT54GL.

In fact,

I have one of these myself and have set them up for

numerous other

people. Depending on the firmware you use, they're

rock-solid and very

fast. I'm currently using Tomato Firmware on all of my

54GLs, but I've

used DD-WRT in the past.
