I'm guessing that the "Linux compatible" description you read is
referring to the OS that is running on the router itself. But to
answer your question: yes, the WRT54GL will serve well for a network
of Windows computers. I've the WRT54GL at home (with Tomato
firmware), and at work (with OpenWRT firmware).

Aside:
I was recently shopping for a home Wi-Fi router, and was initially
searching for devices capable of 802.11n. Let me warn anyone thinking
of purchasing the Linksys WRT610N (dual-band wireless-N router). This
model has *serious* problems. Despite the numerous complaints posted
at various forums, I thought I would give one a try, anyway. After
several days of troubleshooting problems with the WRT610N, I can vouch
for the accuracy of these complaints. I ended up replacing it with a
WRT54GL, which works like a champ, albeit with no support of 802.11n.
