Have you gotten this to work?  Every time I have to replace a boot drive
on an x86 I curse and curse and wish it was some other firmware since I
can never convince grub to pretend drives are mapped how they will be
(once I'm booting from the drive) and not how it's booted now (USB
stick).  Using an installer is probably your best bet.
