[Tfug] GRUB error at boot

I've got a buddy at work that gets this error right when he hits enter at
the grub menu when he's booting his Linux box:

"Out of range pointer 0xec00. Aborted. Press any key to exit"

He's running Debian Sid (I know, I know, it's not stable) and he's really
stuck.... anyone have any ideas? He says this problem showed up right after
doing a "apt-get dist-upgrade"

GRUB says it's version 1.96 by the way (it's a grub 2.0 pre-release)
