[Tfug] Automatically starting X?

I've set up a second box (puccini) that acts essentially as a dumb
terminal. It's providing me a second monitor for my laptop via
Synergy (which acts as a software-based KVM, minus the video).
Problem is that I needed to be logged into puccini and have an X
session running before I'm able to start Synergy. So, I'm thinking
that the solution is to configure puccini to login a regular user on
boot and start up X. So: two questions: (1) Is there a better way to
do this than automatically logging in? (2) If I do configure an auto
login, is there a preferred way? Off the top of my head, I'm thinking
that I can just 'startx' via rc.local ('su'ing to a non-privileged
user).
Thanks!
Claude
