If Apple opens OSX to general PC-style hardware, they have to compete
head to head against MS and it turns into a pricewar bloodbath.  While
at the same time their lucrative hardware business goes into the
toilet.

Ain't gonna happen.

Plus, Microsoft will immediately halt shipments of MS-Office on the
Mac and Apple *needs* MS-Office available to survive in the corporate
world.

Microsoft may be a wounded behemoth, but they're still a behemoth.
Apple has thrived by not going head to head with 'em.
