What are you doing that makes it so complicated?  Most people just
need to do something along the lines of:

	make-kpkg --initrd --revision=foo.bar kernel_image

Here's what I use:

	make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version="-cjr" --revision=$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M) kernel_image

Seems difficult to make it much simpler.
