sounds exactly like what I need. Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with the 
linux distros. I assumed most of the most popular ones were bound to 
some desktop environment, so the question was whether this could be 
dismantled. Knowing that the install could be made without all of that 
is sufficient. Ever try running KDE w/ fvwm as your window manager? 
That's a strange combination.
