Getting all the hardware on my new laptop (almost a year old now)
working under Ubuntu took several months. I started with Gutsy, and
eventually upgraded to Hardy before I reached that happy place (the
only thing I haven't tested yet is the IEEE1394). Based on what you
and other people have been saying, I made the right choice staying
with Hardy -- for now at least. The release notes didn't indicate any
real advantage in upgrading, and I was loathe to fix something that
wasn't broken.
I wouldn't want to discourage you from trying something new, but... I
would have a *really* hard time leaving a Debian-based distro for a
RedHat one. <Insert Distro Holy War Here> ;-)
That's not to say that I don't use Red Hat or Fedora on a daily basis.
In fact, I probably would suggest RHEL as a good choice for a general
purpose distro (server, as well as desktop) due to the commercial
support. But for my own personal machines? ...I would become
unbearably frustrated.
Sure, some stuff may not work OOB, regardless of what distro you are
using, and that's when you roll up your sleeves and go to work. It
may mean recompiling libraries, kernels -- you name it. Pesonallly, I
think it is much easier to customize a Debian system rather than a
Redhat one. I won't go into specifics now, unless prompted.
Anyhow, I hope you get things sorted out. If you really know what you
are doing, it's really six of one, and half-dozen of the other. But I
wouldn't discard the possibility of rolling back to Hardy if Fedora
doesn't work out for you.
