It is indeed a lava flow.
I've been to this one:

Just south of that (lighter area), there are some roads (need a
good truck, preferrably 4wd) that take you to an assortment of
lava tubes you can hike through. Loads of fun.
Zoom in close enough and you'll see that google has included the
primitive roads.
Also near that location is a hill/dune with white sand.
