[Tfug] which linux for really old laptop

i got a really old laptop from my dad that i plan to put linux on and then
donate.  what flavor of linux would people here recommend that's:

   1. quick and easy to setup
   2. has a gui

i was thinking ubuntu would be the quickest setup, but it's pretty bloated.
on the complete flipside, i know there's distros like damn small linux that
would be good for an old pc but i'm assuming those will require lots of
effort to get X or some other window manager on there.

thoughts?
