I grow weary on sub-responding to this thread. I'll try for a final time
to direct this in the way I intended.

No one is blaming you for your choice of operating system. I don't feel
that you are less of a person for running MacOS or even Windows.
Certainly there are many good reasons to do so. If you require software
not supported under FOSS OSes to accomplish your tasks you should
certainly not run a FOSS OS.

My problem with the original direction of the thread was that Bowie (and
later others) were "calling out Linux" for their inability to use the
available desktop environments to suit their needs. In the case where
proprietary software is not required to meet your needs, KDE and Gnome
(and several other desktop environments) are every bit as polished as
Windows/MacOS. Distribution vendors have done amazing work to ensure
that even unskilled users can go from live cd to fully functional
desktop environment in under an hour (no tinkering required). The
choices in desktop environments and related tools is diverse, I value
that freedom to choose as do many others.

I don't think that TFUG is the appropriate place to call out dedicated
(in most cases unpaid) programmers on the basis of preference.
Additionally, defending this preference with the suggestion that
proprietary OSs are in some measure free just serves to raise my hackles.

If we are to compare proprietary OS to FOSS OS in this forum further, I
think we should stick to discussing the free portions or to compare them
as objectively as possible on their merits as opposed to our anecdotal
notions about them.

The idea that FOSS OSes are only for tinkerers is an idea that I think
is false these days (although oft invoked), and very damaging to a very
valuable community.
