[Tfug] Can y'all stand a *windows* question? (Sorry...)

This isn't for me, it's for a seriously non-techie friend in California.
He's got a large NTFS-formatted drive with tons of pictures on it, and
Windows has managed to thoroughly scramble his file allocation table -
filenames and directories are gobblygook-named, and not accessible.

Western Digital says most decent recovery programs can sort this out, but
when I google something like:

windows data recovery

...I get tons of hits, many of 'em obvious scams.  And since I haven't had
to deal with anything like this for years now :) I have no idea what's
decent.  He's willing to pay for something that works...

Help?
