Linux, long suffering from the "designed by geeks for geeks" syndrome, has largely been left with unintuitive, difficult to use applications that are at best carbon-copies of their Mac or Windows counterparts. Sure, there are some good-looking applications with innovative interfaces on Linux -- various Superkaramba widgets come to mind -- but they are few in numbers when compared to those in the worlds of the web and commercial OSes."

You know, in a way I see what the quote is getting at, but
at the same time it comes loaded with a bunch of assumptions
about what's 'good' and 'bad' in computing. I think these
days most people who end up stepping away from Windows/OSX
end up there because their experience is falling short in
some ways, so right there the assumption about what's 'good'
and 'bad' goes out the window(s) (pun intended... even
though it's a bad one). And the truth is that open source
development is growing. So I think what you're dealing with
here is a difference in priorities. There are people who
have had a real paradigm shift (or have never become
enamored by the Windows/OSX paradigm). Maybe these people
prefer scaled down and simple, or 'crude', if you prefer.
I'll tell you, I can do on my even-cruder-than-Linux
FreeBSD box a lot more than most people can on their
Windows/OSX box. My priorities are with power, flexibility
and the open source principle and I think there is room
for all of us in the world of computing. On a last note,
I don't really think I'd be interested in the idea of an
all encompassing best of all worlds where scenario where
the power of "innovative ideas in application design and
user experience" meet the "power, flexibility and open
source principle" of linux; I kind of prefer my clunky
old FreeBSD experience ~ Chris
