Yes, there many things that are impressive about eclipse, including
it's liberal use of your systems resources. ;-)

Actually, there are a few neat things from eclipse I'd like to see in
other dev environments.  One of them is a sane build-tool like Ant.
Go ahead, throw things at me -- I have on my +5 chain-mail!

<rant> One of the inhibiting factors of starting or migrating dev
projects between different environments, IMO, is the necessity of
having to reconfigure the entire build process.  I think this is more
an issue now than in the past, given the larger number of developers,
and tools to choose from.  Some projects, out of practical necessity,
standardize on environments like Eclipse, KDevelop, or autotools.
IMO, this requirement would not be necessary if they used a standard,
but also extensible, build system, such as Ant.  Imagine being able to
work on a project with you favorite IDE ( e.g., Emacs + a nice wide
screen terminal ;-) ), in tandem with colleagues who are more inclined
to the clicky sort of tools.  You make changes to the code, tweak the
build settings*, and commit.  Your colleagues update, and everything
works seamlessly in their KDevelop sessions.  It can happen! </rant>
