[Tfug] lpr and unknown printer

I want to be able to print from the command line. My printer is a 
network printer and is configured in CUPS. I can print from every 
X program I have tried but this command fails as both root and a 
normal user:

  #lpr -P tp0 test.txt
  #lpr: tp0: unknown printer
 

lpstat output shows that my printer is tp0:

  #lpstat -p -d
  printer tp0 is idle.  enabled since Fri 25 Jan 2008 05:55:36 PM MST
  system default destination: tp0


What should I look at next?
