As with most things, the first one is where you learn
the things that prove invaluable on the subsequent
ones.  E.g., the fact that the contacts on the
outside of the shell are *recessed* -- since most
shells are clear plastic, you never really *see*
how recessed they are.  And, since I wasn't
using an inspection microscope (or magnifying
glass), there was no easy way to tell that I
was NOT touching with the contacts with my VOM
probes   :<

I really am getting quite fed up with connectors,
though.  They are almost always too delicate
(e.g., the pins in a wide SCSI cable) and invariably
not conducive to use "blind" (i.e., you can mate
a 1/4" phone plug/jack with your eyes closed while
eating a sandwich in your other hand!)
