Well...there really is a FOSS link to the voting machine fiasco.

All the current systems run on Windows.  All code involved
(application and OS) is "trade secret".

Every attempt to fix it runs into Microsoft lobbying muscle.  They
don't want a high-profile application like voting to move to FOSS even
if it increases security and transparency.

It's similar to their battle over file formats in gov't use.
