I started with Ubuntu 5.10 and it just worked on a PII 300 desktop that died shortly after. I've been using Ubuntu every since and now have a Dell 1430n with the factory install of 7.04 that I haven't bothered to upgrade.
I also run Debian Etch on a i386 and several Sun 64bit processors. Debian works fine.
I have customized Ubuntu to the point I use FVWM as my window manager and mostly work from the command line. I use Emacs for answering e-mail and writing XHTML web pages. I customized and added programs so it isn't recognizable as Ubuntu except at boot. In doing so, I've managed to learn some Linux and use Ubuntu to look up things to get started. You can learn to use Linux from Ubuntu and have something usable while you are learning.
