[Tfug] Expert/Production Systems

Hi,

Does anyone have any first-hand experience
developing and deploying a rule-based
Expert System (i.e. Production System)?

I'm looking to get a feel for the resource
requirements thereof and ways that I can
possibly constrain those.  I'm sure, an
interpretive approach will be the only
semi-deterministic way to bound those
resources -- but, the literature suggests
the time penalty will be exhorbitant (though
I can't really understand why -- unless
there is some great expectation of "speed"
in the decision making).

I would also appreciate any pointers on
"missing features" for just such a system.
In particular, how to pare it down to
make the runtime environment more efficient.
