<frown> I'd find that hard to believe given how they are
built, etc. The "damaged" areas *look* like the glass has
been deformed by something like a finger (like the display was
squeezed in that spot).

I'll have to experiment with some of the "already damaged"
panels to see if I can reproduce the type of failure in
another spot on the screen.

I don't suggest you do this to a *good* display, *but*, if you
gently press on the display while it is active and then remove
your fingertip, you will see the same sort of "darkening"
for a brief moment. I'll try being a bit more aggressive with
a few and see what happens...
(I'll try to send you a photo, offlist, of what a "damaged"
screen looks like)
