Being that ArcGIS, etc are proprietary, of course there won't be a
frontend for it unless ESRI provides it.  (Like many proprietary
products, though, the engine is available for *nix.)

But, in the free software world, there are a number of capable GIS
systems available.  In fact, the pragmatic programmer people are just
about to release a book on free GIS packages.  I just got finished
reviewing the book and it's pretty decent (primarily aimed at the
