Mail readers such as Mutt thread based upon the Message-ID and
In-Reply-To headers (which, like all things email, are fairly but not
perfectly reliable).  You'd need to pull those to fully "clean up."
Many mail readers (in particular, web-based) won't let you edit all
the headers.  It's better to simply start a new message.
