They are indeed two very different languages.  The fact that Java and
JavaScript have similar names was the result of a marketing ploy by
Netscape and Sun in 1995.  Since then, JavaScript has had several
implementations and monikers.  The current JavaScript standard is
known as ECMAScript.

I am no JavaScript expert, but from what I understand, JavaScript
compatibility amongst the various browsers, and versions thereof, is
quite a burden for web developers;  I would be interested to hear from
any experienced web developers who might care to comment about that.
