Hardware support, for one.  One of the reasons for choosing Linux over
BSD is that it's a path of least resistance.  If Linux had the press
coverage of Microsoft--or even Apple--hardware vendors would be
clamoring to share their specs with us and/or writing their own GPL'd
modules.  And those who refused would be run out of the market.
