[Tfug] Boot troubles with CD

Ok,
      I love my Powermate NEC8100. However I've discovered, recently,
that this
machine fails to boot if I have  a CD sitting in the drive when I power
it up.

      My workaround is to have the drive carriage ejected with the CD in
it before I
power up. The machine then finds the kernel, boots up, retracts the carriage
back into the drive, and mounts the CD.

      Is this a sign that the CD ROM drive needs cleaning? (Let's assume
a simple fix first off.)
