If you want a simple window manager stay away from fvwm.

It's extremely functional and customizable and tunable.  It's extremely addictive.  You'll find yourself getting up at 3AM to make a change in the workspace configuration file to tweak a feature.  After a while you'll find yourself understanding the man page.

It might be the ultimate Linux computer game.
