[Tfug] Finally, a real Linux question...

I haven't tried any of these things myself but, the command "metacity 
--replace" as root is supposed to set metacity as wm.  Also, there is a text 
file (this is ubuntu 6.10) under /usr/share/gnome called "default.wm" that 
might work if edited (two line file).  There are shell scripts, 
/etc/altaernatives/x-windowmgr as well as usr/bin/gnome-wm which are 
supposed to select your window manager.
