this is over kill but Oracle has an utility that converts formats.
Older versions could emit XLS format and I am sure the current does
also.   You could down load  Oracle 10g from  otn.oracle.com .  then
in the ORACLE_HOME/ctx/bin directory is ctxhx that can conver the
files and a shell script written to automate the process.
