The company I used to work for outsourced all of their printer/copier
stuff to Xerox a couple of years ago. Initially, each department had a
mag stripe card that had to be swiped into the copier before use. The
copier would total the pages by card number.
More recently they replaced the copiers with machines with keypads and
each department was given an account number. You had to enter the
account number before the copier would work.
So it appears that the original philosophy of "Where's the click" lives
on to this day.
This thread has been interesting and brings back memories of some of the
early computers I played with. Wonder how many of this group have been
around since "The dawn of the computer age?"
