One try on the username access for ssh seems a bit drastic; I recall
that I have mistyped
my own userID previously and I would not want to be locked out of my own
box (from a remote loc.)
for a typing error.

I haven't read anyone mention of DenyHosts
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DenyHosts>; it works after the fact by
monitoring the log but
it has worked successfully for me for a while now.
