I think you have to put these in your apt/sources.list for mplayer to work

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main



deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib


That's all I have; and mplayer works fine. On everything.  There's also 
something about a "marillat' site in France or something
if you're using Sarge.
