You might want to look at a Toyota Prius. Wes Kent (like you both an
ex-cop and 6' 8") has one, as it is one of the few cars he can fit in
without hitting his head (both front and back seat).
And a lot of times two vehicles, one for the commute, and one for the
family, can cost less over all, based on miles put on the big vehicle
(cost of repair, gas, etc).
SUVs and Vans don't bother me when "used", it's the single person time
that feels wasteful. I know many people online that have a prius and an
excursion (big huge ford SUV). Just do the math, and figure out when/if
a prius + your large vehicle would save the family money over all.

Same here. I am sure that lilo was very careful in his riding, but just
look around the U of A area, I am very surprised we don't have more hit
and runs here. Wes used to give out tickets by the bucket load to the
students (he would sit near University and Park).
Of course most drivers also don't pay any attention to the bikes, and
that is quite a problem as well.
The last issue is the hit-n-run. If you hit someone or something, call
for help, and stay put. Running away from the problem might help now,
but knowing that you killed someone, did not help to save his life, and
did not come forward will (should) hurt for the rest of your life.
