there are a bunch of functions for converting between "natural" and "net
order".
Look up ntoi, iton, etc.
Also take a gander at
http://discuss.joelonsoftware.com/default.asp?joel.3.413013.37, which might
be somewhat useful to you. Or mildly entertaining.
