Somebody is bound to mention LVM, but I haven't used it yet.  Also, I
seem to recall that the debian installer will size the partitions
automatically if you let it..  Anyhow, here are somewhat arbitrary
suggestions for partition sizes. Unless you are runninng a server or
unless you have network filesystems available, you probably want to
give as much possible space to /home and /usr.

 / ( root) : 256 MiB
 /boot     : 64 MiB
 /var       : 512 MiB
 /tmp      : 512 MiB
 /usr       : 4GiB
 /home   : the rest
