yes, it is linux (sorry bsd person, no offense intended by not
specifying).  the only kernel
option i found in debian is a scaler.  i don't
know what a scaler is and mplayer works ok without it.  i googled fb driver
with no indication that it will run a dvi lcd matrox g550.

to bowie: because i was new to linux and a technically able person, who you
personally have also relied on for help, specified that card for me.  he didn't
realize that dvi was not supported by foss, or didn't care about
proprietariness,
or there were no foss drivers at the time.  i don't know which.
