i seem to be the only person who has tried it the hard way, so i will stop here.

the errors where it tells you which dirs are missing as you described
are easily fixable.  misspelled crashes and messageless segmentation
exceptions are not.  in between -- supposedly fixable but very
annoying -- are the errors that don't go away even when you do what
you are supposed to for them, like:

E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room
E: Problem with MergeList
/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_dists_etch_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

... even when /var/lib/apt is intact, all because varcache was not as it wanted.
