Normally the CMOS is returned to a factory default setting. If your worried about losing all of your settings there are small program out there that will backup your current CMOS settings to a bootable floppy (requires DOS). After you replace the batter rerun the program and it will restore all of your CMOS settings, you just have to adjust the clock.
