Thank you, the ps -aux worked just fine. I found the process number and =
killed the process. Things are working again.

If you can see the offending window. Your friend is
xkill
Point, click. Kaboom.
Also, I like ps -aux. This will show absolutely everything running on
the machine - including processes who have been divorced from any
control terminal - which is likely the case with your funky process.
