[Tfug] remote filesystems

Here's the problem. I have two servers separated by much internet and
several braindead firewalls. One of them actively uses a whole mess of
files. The other server occasionally needs to be able to read/write any
one of these files at random.

I have set up OpenVPN to make available an happy tunnel between the two
machines. It works wonderfully.

I then went through the minor hassle of starting up NFS services on the
file server and the much more major hassle (for reasons of stupid typos
in /etc/hosts.allow) of setting up the client to attempt to mount said
remote directory.

Nothing doing. The kernel doesn't contain NFS filesystem support. Or
Samba support for that matter.

Now here's where it gets good.

I _can't_ just recompile the kernel or toss in the new modules. The
client machine is running off of a VPS system and I thus have control
over everything except the kernel itself.

So... while I wait to see if I can convince them to give me the modules
I need, I present you all with the puzzle.

What else could I possibly try?
