He seems overly enthusiastic.
I mean, clearly I have always preferred Linux, but at least I try to
keep an open mind, and not make undocumented pronouncements like:
"And quite frankly I'm beginning to wonder if this Open Source thing
really is the right way to go." -- Lion-o
I think you should be able to rustle up some better documentation. Or
at least something that makes an attempt to scientifically examine the
issues, and doesn't write in caricature:
"Why ? I think because doing so SUCKS from a personal point of view.
Really; most of the tech persons will tell you that writing
documentation is one of the most horrible things to do. So if you simply
have an open project which has lots of volunteers who is going to do the
documentation? Sure; you may run into people willing to do it but will
it be usefull ? Isn't it so that a programmer knows the software best?
Or you have no one who wants to do it, then what ? Force them to do it ?
And that is where a commercial interest may benefit the end user. Don't
believe me? (boy, rough crowd wink) then just take a look at the Solaris
documentation. As you can see there you can access documentation from
Solaris 2.4 and up, and that is not mentioning all the extra info. So
why can these guys provide us with all this valuable information where
others neglect this here and there ?"
A caricature of a "Socratic" dialog, without any of the wisdom, or much
going for it other than he answers his own questions to avoid you having
to think about them.
<ignorable>
That above paragraph doesn't really read very convincingly, does it? Is
that because he wants you to believe that because he asks all the those
questions that somehow his answers have more weight? Sure, it always
helps to try to answer questions no one has asked, it lends the illusion
that you are actually engaging the audience in conversation, but why
should that make it seem convincing to you? Is it because you are too
lazy to try to parse it, or because you really like Lion-o's writing
style? Did you know that Lion-o's were once America's most popular
cereal made from Lions? Lions are the kings of the jungle, isn't that
right? Did you know that some people will claim that Lions actually
live in Savanna? Of course, we all know no lions live in Georgia. So
how can you find any of that worthwhile?
</ignorable>
So, basically, I wouldn't take what he says as worth much of anything...
especially in regards to filesystems.
You may be able to glean some commands from his writing, but you could
probably get more help from the man pages.
So, all that being said, I am not trying to dissuade you from trying
Solaris. Obviously, it is a very good Operating System. Expanding your
knowledge is never a bad thing.
