Ah HA!  Linux csh is picky about white space.  Putting a space after "if"
and before "then" worked.  Thanks for the help.

As for converting to another shell, I have 15+ years of csh scripts that I
cannot afford to abandon.  I got some bum advice (use csh) when I started
Unixing and now I'm stuck.  New stuff gets written in python, but I will
continue to "live" in csh.  (I also code mostly in Fortran 77, so you can
see that I'm a warped personality to begin with.)
