Tunneling X through an SSH connection will work through firewalls,
across the internet, etc... whereas making a regular remote X connection
will not.
The sshd sets up a local fake X server on the server (note that your
DISPLAY is automagically set to something like localhost:10.0 or 11 if
somebody else is already tunneling something, etc).
The only real problem with tunneling X is that there is some measurable
latency increase as packets have to pass through a few more steps before
arriving on your end.
For extra credit, you can play around with actual remote X logins (ie,
making a pII into a usable machine by giving it a good ethernet card,
decent video, and then just running -everything- off of your real box).
