[Tfug] Weird video behavior (ThinkPad A31)

Been having some really weird video behavior on my IBM ThinkPad A31 
lately.  I suspect the worst, but thought I'd ask here first.

Basically I'm getting a weird 1" square static around my mouse cursor 
when I hover over unicode-rxvt or aterm terminals (may happen in others 
too, those are the ones I have installed).  I don't see these screen 
artifacts in other applications usually.  Occasionally I'll see an 
EXTREMELY faint pink block (same 1" size) that follows the cursor, but 
not always.  I also notice strange screen noise as early as the IBM 
splash screen that displays during POST.  I've had my laptop apart half 
a dozen times now and haven't been able to find any issues that are 
apparent (reseated all the connectors for the screen I could find and 
blew out dust, etc.).

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense.  It's hard to describe strange 
visual issues like this!  I've posted some screenshots to illustrate 
(they aren't great as they were taken with my PDA camera which is only 
VGA):
