Also note, that if your running Arts (the KDE sound manager), and possibly 
Esound?/Enlighten?/something-like-that (Gnome sound manager), that these 
grab /dev/dsp and don;t always play nice... they expect all applications to 
go through them... things like Xine and many older apps can;t open /dev/dsp 
because Arts has a lock on it.  Try doing a "killall artsd" and then restart 
your app.
