I apologize for the slightly off topic nature of this post; however, I
would like to ask for everyone's cooperation in a matter of some
importance. Bear with me, and you'll see the relevance.
Currently, the AZ state legislature is considering Bill HB2093. This bill
effectively repeals statue 15-808. Statute 15-808 allows the state to
appropriate funds for technologically assisted distance learning programs,
K-12. These programs provide curriculum, resources, etc. for students
and parents seeking alternatives to public schools. They are especially
effective with students who need more one-on-one time than a traditional
environment can offer. (Eg: Autistic students or students with other
special needs.)
Additionally, these programs encourage technological innovation, creation,
and research. Some are even proponents of the open source movement,
using whenever and wherever possible, open source software in place of
proprietary counterparts and encouraging students to do the same.
The motive for this bill appears to be monetary; however, considering that
roughly 90% of these students would return to public schools (some with
greater cost to the state due to their special needs), the state savings
would be slim, if any.
I urge you to contact the legislators and inform them of your opinion in
this matter. This contact must be made quickly because the vote will be
taken at the end of next week.
The preferred means of contact is via fax; second is e-mail, and, finally,
snail mail. For a list of legislators, e-mail, etc. see:

Alternatively, e-mail me off the list and I will send you the list.
Thank you for your aid in maintaining a diverse, technologically rich
educational environment in Arizona.
