Also, there's smixer, which is a command line tool that you can also set 
at boot to set your volumes across everything. While things like KDE and 
Gnome usually remember your volume settings and fix them when you log in, 
most WMs dont muck around with it. So setmixer is perfect when you have a 
desktop where multiple users log in to different WMs or DEs.
