This might not help, but if you're using Esound, I've had similar 
problems with Esound on my box. The problem in my case is that esound 
doesn't always clean up after itself. Esound creates a directory 
called .esd in /tmp which holds the socket used by sound apps. 
Sometimes, my girlfriend will login and then when she logs out, that 
directory will not be removed. Look for /tmp/.esd and check who owns 
it. If you don't own it, just remove it with rm -rf /tmp/.esd. You'll 
have to be root to do it if it's not yours, of course.
