Hello Mark,
Maybe to get started, you should try and download the iso from:
http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=4
They have the Debian 3.0 iso images there and the "generic" boot
from the sparc port should work. I haven't tried it so don't know
for sure. If you just want to try and get linux installed and
running, you could always try the old RedHat 6.2 (I have installed
and run it for a long time.) Problem there is that RedHat has
dropped sparc support.

I understand Suse and Mandrake also have sparc ports now that are
more current than the RedHat port.
